From Day to Day

Using the System

Posted on: August 18, 2010

Do not get me wrong I believe that assistance from the government is there for a reason.  Who is getting the assistance is what really bothers me.

In no way do I look down on parents who need to take assistance to be able to get on their feet.  It is the parents who use the system so that they can be lazy and have me and everyone else who works take care of their kids for them.  Foodstamps, WIC, Cash Assistance, Section 8, Medicaid are all things that us as working Americans should be able to get when necessary.  I mean after all that is what our taxes are suppose to go to, right?

On many occasions I have gone to the grocery store and got behind the person in line who has the register belt full of name brand products and wearing the name brand clothes from head to toe just to watch them pull out their food stamp card after the cashier rings up the last item.  $200.00 or more all paid by none other than, you guessed it,  all of us!  Then to top it off seeing them in the parking lot with either a nicer car than me or having all the extras like rims, body kits, etc.

There have also been people I know personally who lie regarding their income to get WIC so that they have free milk, cheese, cereal, ect.  Saying that they are single moms and get child support from the dad and it really is that they are still with the dad both bringing in decent paychecks and just wanting something for nothing.

I don’t understand how this is legal!  Their are so many families out their who are really struggling to get by while still working a full time job.  That is what the assistance is there for.  Not for the people who just want it because they “qualify” for it.  There were plenty of times when Justin and I first started out after having Anthony that we struggled to pay the rent and buy formula and diapers but I refused to ask for help because I felt that I chose to have a baby and he was my responsibility and not the states.  Luckily on the times we did need the assistance it was there for us.  A lot of times we went without just so Anthony could have the things he needed.  It wasn’t perfect but we got through and now though not making a lot of money we make it and not having to worry about how we are going to pay the rent or the power bill.

So I guess this entry is just to vent a bit and to tell moms and dads that it is okay to ask for help if you need it but it is not okay to take from others if you can take care of your self.

What are your feelings on this subject?  Have you ever encountered people who “scam” the system?
